Monument Valley’s spectacular rock formations are among Arizona’s most photogenic attractions. Monument Valley (tel (435) 727 3353; website www.navajonationparks.org/htm/monumentvalley.htm) straddles the Arizona-Utah border and is surrounded by the Navajo Reservation, the largest Native American reservation in the United States.
The 27km Valley Drive takes you past the most spectacular rock formations including the famous Mittens and the Totem Pole. However it is an unsealed road with a 15mph (24 km/h) speed limit so you should allow around 1½ hours to complete the relatively short circuit.
Admission to the Monument Valley Najavo Tribal Park costs $5. National Park passes are not valid.
