Although a suburb of San Francisco, this student neighbourhood across the bay, north of Oakland, is unique enough to warrant its own section. There is free internet access (free use of computers plus free wireless internet) at the Berkeley Public Library. Although served by buses from around the Bay Area; the easiest way to visit Berkeley is by BART, which is about a 25-minute ride from San Francisco. There are three BART stations in Berkeley and Downtown Berkeley is closest to most points of interest.
AC Transit (tel 510 891 4700) operates local bus services in Berkeley and to neighbouring Oakland and San Francisco. A one-way ride costs $2 for travel in the East Bay and
Transbay services to San Francisco cost $4.

Berkeley’s University of California campus is its main attraction. Campus tours run from the UC Berkeley Visitors Center or you can visit the observation deck at the top of Sather Tower for a fine view of the campus and the surrounding area.
