Berkeley

Although a suburb of San Francisco, this student neighbourhood across the bay, north of Oakland, is unique enough to warrant its own section. Yuppies and hippies mix to give Berkeley an interesting vibe and there are several top attractions that make Berkeley worthy of a day trip from San Francisco.

INTERNET ACCESS

There is free internet access (free use of computers plus free wireless internet) at the Berkeley Public Library. The central branch (2090 Kittredge Street, Berkeley; M Downtown Berkeley (BART) D 1, 7, 9, 18, 49, 51, 51B, 800, 851, F (stop: Shattuck Avenue & Kitredge Street); open Mon noon-8pm, Tue 10am-8pm, Wed-Sat 10am-6pm, Sun 1pm-5pm) is the most convenient for most travellers.


Free wireless internet is also available at many cafes in Berkeley including A Cup Above (2598 Telegraph Avenue, Berkeley; open Tue-Sun 10am-5pm) and Caffè Strada (2300 College Avenue, Berkeley; open Mon-Sat 6.30am-midnight, Sun 7.30am-midnight).

Coming & going & local transport

Although served by buses from around the Bay Area; the easiest way to visit Berkeley is by BART, which is about a 25-minute ride from San Francisco. There are three BART stations in Berkeley and Downtown Berkeley is closest to most points of interest.

 

AC Transit (tel 510 891 4700) operates local bus services in Berkeley and to neighbouring Oakland and San Francisco. A one-way ride costs $2 for travel in the East Bay and

Transbay services to San Francisco cost $4.

UC Berkeley

Berkeley’s University of California campus is its main attraction. Campus tours run from the UC Berkeley Visitors Center or you can visit the observation deck at the top of Sather Tower for a fine view of the campus and the surrounding area.
