There is a good choice of places to eat in San Francisco including many good value places that easily fit into a backpacker's budget.


Start the day at Red Door Cafe (1608 Bush Street, San Francisco; bus 2, 3, 47, 49, 76, 90 (stop: Van Ness & Sutter Street); tel (415) 441 1564; open Mon 8am–2.30pm, Wed–Fri 8am–2.30pm, Sat–Sun 9am–2.30pm), which is a great spot for a leisurely brunch.


Handy Delicatessen (1815 Irving Street, San Francisco; MUNI Metro Judah & 19th Avenue (N) bus 28, 28L, 91 (stop: 19th Avenue & Irving Street), N-OWL (stop: Judah & 19th Avenue); open 10am–2am daily) near Golden Gate Park comes highly recommended by locals for its great sandwiches.


In the Castro district are two more great spots for sandwiches, which are both worth a visit. Tanguito (2850 Jones Street, San Francisco; tram F (stop: Jones Street & Beach Street); tel (415) 577 4223; open Tue–Sun 11am–5pm) is a popular Argentine food stand near Fisherman’s Wharf that has brilliant hamburgers plus Argentine specialities like choripán sandwiches and empanadas.


Little Star Pizza (400 Valencia Street, San Francisco; BART 16th Street-Mission bus 22 (stop: 16th Street & Valencia Street); tel (415) 551 7827; open Tue–Thu 5pm–10pm, Fri 5pm–11pm, Sat 3pm–11pm, Sun 3pm–10pm) in the Mission District.


A local speciality is the San Francisco burrito. This is a more elaborate version of the Mexican-American burrito that is noted for its generous size. The San Francisco burrito developed in the Mission District and this is where you have to go to experience the city’s best burritos.


La Cumbre Taqueria (515 Valencia Street, San Francisco; BART 16th Street-Mission bus 22 (stop: 16th Street & Valencia Street); tel (415) 863 8205; open 11am–2am daily) claims to have invented the San Francisco burrito, although this is disputed by El Faro (2399 Folsom Street, San Francisco; bus 12 (stop: Folsom Street & 20th Street); tel (415) 647 3716; open Mon–Sat 9am–8pm), which also claims to have invented it.
