Rochester

With over 1 million people in its metropolitan area, Rochester is the third-largest city in New York. It is an important business centre with many large companies headquartered here, although it doesn't rank very highly as a budget travel destination.

Coming & going

AIR

Greater Rochester International Airport has flights to many destinations in the Midwest and the Mid-Atlantic including Chicago, Cincinatti, Cleveland, Detroit, New York, Toronto and Washington DC. Local bus routes 2 and 4 connect the airport with downtown Rochester.

BUS & COACH

Greyhound (tel (585) 232 5121) and Trailways coaches go to Albany, Buffalo, New York City, Syracuse and Toronto. The bus terminal is behind Midtown Plaza in downtown Rochester.

TRAIN

Amtrak trains go to Albany, Buffalo, New York City, Niagara Falls, Syracuse and Toronto. The train station is at 320 Central Avenue.

Local transport

Rochester-Genesee Regional Transportation Authority (RGRTA) runs local bus services in the Rochester area. The standard one-way fare is $1.25 and an all-day pass is $3.

Sightseeing, museums & tourist attractions

George Eastman House: International Museum of Photography & Film

Rochester is the home of Kodak so it is fitting that the city is home to a world class photography museum. The museum is housed in the Colonial Revival mansion that George Eastman - founder of Eastman Kodak Company - lived in from 1905 to 1932. The museum's collection includes over 400,000 photographs including a collection of Ansel Adams' early works and a major collection of French photography. This extensive collection is supplemented by a programme of temporary exhibitions.

Rochester Museum & Science Center

This science museum has three floors of exhibits including interactive displays. It is focused mostly on science and technology although there are also some exhibits on cultural heritage.
