Ashland

This attractive small town near the California border is of home to Southern Oregon University and it is noted for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (website www.osfashland.org), which runs from February to October. It is a pleasant town to spend a day or two and there is a hostel, which makes Ashland a good base for a day trip to Crater Lake National Park.

Coming & going

Greyhound (tel (541) 779 2103; website www.greyhound.com) buses stop in nearby Medford with services to Portland and San Francisco. Greyhound buses also go to Klamath Falls, where Amtrak's Coast Starlight train stops en route between Seattle and Los Angeles. The Medford Greyhound station is located at 212 N Bartlett Street, Medford, OR 97501.

Local transport

The Rogue Valley Transportation District (website www.rvtd.org) provides bus services in Ashland and to the neighbouring towns of Central Point, Jacksonville, Medford, Phoenix, Talent and White City. Bus fares within Ashland cost 50c; most fares to nearby towns are $2.
