This attractive small town near the California border is of home to Southern Oregon University and it is noted for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (website www.osfashland.org), which runs from February to October. It is a pleasant town to spend a day or two and there is a hostel, which makes Ashland a good base for a day trip to Crater Lake National Park.

Greyhound buses also go to Klamath Falls, where Amtrak's Coast Starlight train stops en route between Seattle and Los Angeles. The Rogue Valley Transportation District (website www.rvtd.org) provides bus services in Ashland and to the neighbouring towns of Central Point, Jacksonville, Medford, Phoenix, Talent and White City. Bus fares within Ashland cost 50c; most fares to nearby towns are $2.
